WHY INSTAGRAM WASN'T ORIGINALLY A PHOTO APP

WHY INSTAGRAM WASN'T ORIGINALLY A PHOTO APP

Today, Instagram is almost synonymous with:

PHOTOS.

But that wasn't the original idea.

Before Instagram became one of the biggest social platforms in the world...

it was something much more complicated.

And it had a completely different name.

IT STARTED AS BURNB

In 2010, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched an app called:

Burbn

The idea was built around location.

Users could:

Check in

Share where they were

Post plans

Earn points

Share photos

Chat with friends

It was basically trying to do too many things at once.

AND THAT WAS THE PROBLEM

Burbn had a lot of features.

But when Systrom and Krieger looked at how people were actually using it...

one feature stood out:

PHOTOS.

Users weren't necessarily obsessed with all the complicated check-in features.

They particularly liked sharing photos.

That gave the founders an idea.

SO THEY DELETED MOST OF THE APP

Instead of adding even more features...

they did something much harder.

They removed them.

Check-ins?

Gone.

Plans?

Gone.

Most of the extra features?

Gone.

They kept the part people seemed to care about most:

PHOTO SHARING.

THEN THEY RENAMED IT

The new app became:

Instagram.

The name combined the idea of an instant camera with telegram.

And the product became dramatically simpler.

Take a photo.

Edit it.

Share it.

That's it.

THE FIRST VERSION WAS EXTREMELY SIMPLE

Today Instagram has:

Stories

Reels

DMs

Live

Shopping

Notes

Ads

Recommendations

and much more.

The original product was nothing like that.

It was primarily about:

TAKING AND SHARING PHOTOS.

THEN CAME THE FILTERS

One of Instagram's early advantages was making smartphone photos look more interesting.

You didn't need professional photography equipment.

You could take an ordinary photo...

apply a filter...

and suddenly it looked more artistic.

That made the product feel creative without requiring much skill.

THE GENIUS WASN'T THE CAMERA

Smartphones already had cameras.

The interesting part was:

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU TAKE THE PHOTO?

Instagram made it extremely easy to go from:

PHOTO

EDIT

SHARE

The friction was tiny.

THEN SOMETHING IMPORTANT HAPPENED

People started using Instagram for things the founders hadn't necessarily designed the platform around.

They shared:

Food

Travel

Fashion

Pets

Friends

Art

Businesses

Lifestyle

The platform became bigger than the original photo-sharing concept.

THE APP GREW VERY FAST

Instagram launched in October 2010.

By December 2010, it had reached around:

1 MILLION USERS.

Less than two years after launch...

Facebook announced it would acquire Instagram for approximately:

$1 BILLION.

At the time, Instagram had a relatively small team compared with the enormous companies it would eventually compete with.

WHY DID FACEBOOK WANT IT?

Because Instagram wasn't just a photo app anymore.

It had something extremely valuable:

A rapidly growing mobile social network.

People weren't simply uploading pictures.

They were building:

FOLLOWERS

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

HABITS

CONTENT

IDENTITIES

That network could become much more valuable than the original feature.

THE REAL PRODUCT WAS THE NETWORK

Think about it.

A photo-editing app can be copied.

A filter can be copied.

A camera feature can be copied.

But a network containing:

Hundreds of millions of users

Creators

Communities

Relationships

Content

is much harder to replicate.

THIS IS WHY SIMPLICITY MATTERED

Burbn tried to do:

EVERYTHING.

Instagram focused on:

ONE CORE BEHAVIOR.

Take a photo.

Share it.

The simpler product was the one that exploded.

THE STARTUP LESSON

A common instinct is:

“Let's add more features.”

But sometimes the better question is:

“Which feature do people already love?”

Then:

REMOVE EVERYTHING ELSE.

That's essentially what happened when Burbn became Instagram.

THE BUSINESS LOOP

MANY FEATURES

OBSERVE USER BEHAVIOR

FIND THE MOST POPULAR FEATURE

REMOVE THE REST

SIMPLER PRODUCT

MORE USERS

MORE CONTENT

NETWORK EFFECT

MASSIVE PLATFORM

The breakthrough wasn't adding something.

It was removing things.

AND THEN INSTAGRAM KEPT EVOLVING

Once Instagram had built a massive audience...

it could expand again.

Photos became:

Stories

Videos

Reels

Messaging

Shopping

Creator economy

The company could add features after it had established the core network.

IMAGINE IF THEY HAD NEVER CHANGED BURBN

It might have remained another complicated check-in app.

Instead, the founders noticed something unexpected:

People were telling them what the product should become through their behavior.

They listened.

SIMPLE IDEA

Your original product idea isn't always your real product.

Sometimes your users reveal the real business for you.

You just have to pay attention to:

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY USE.

MAACAT PERSPECTIVE

Instagram wasn't born because someone had the perfect idea for a photo-sharing empire.

It started with a complicated app that tried to do too much.

Then the founders noticed one thing people actually loved.

They removed almost everything else.

And that decision turned:

Burbn → Instagram

Sometimes the biggest business opportunity isn't hidden in what you add.

It's hidden in what you're willing to remove.
