THE QR CODE WAS INVENTED FOR CARS , NOT RESTAURANTS

Before QR codes were on menus, payment screens and Instagram posters, they were sitting on automotive production lines.

Today, you can find a QR code almost anywhere:

Restaurant tables.

Train tickets.

Product packaging.

Bank payments.

Advertisements.

But that wasn't the problem the QR code was designed to solve.

It was a factory problem.

And specifically, it was closely connected to the automotive industry.


THE PROBLEM WASN'T COFFEE

In the early 1990s, Japanese manufacturing was becoming more complicated.

Factories were moving away from producing huge quantities of fewer product types toward high-mix, lower-volume production.

That meant more parts.

More information.

More tracking.

And more data that had to move through the factory.

DENSO, a Japanese automotive supplier, was already using barcodes to manage production information.

But traditional barcodes had a serious limitation:

They couldn't store enough information.

A barcode could hold roughly 20 alphanumeric characters.

Factories sometimes had to use multiple barcodes on the same document just to store enough information.

Workers could end up scanning around 1,000 barcodes a day.

That was slow.

And DENSO wanted something better.


THEN DENSO ASKED A DIFFERENT QUESTION

In 1992, engineer Masahiro Hara was asked by manufacturing sites whether barcode reading could be made faster.

At first, the obvious solution seemed to be:

Make the scanner better.

But Hara realized the problem wasn't only the scanner.

The barcode itself was reaching its limits.

So his team started working on something completely different:

a two-dimensional code.

The goal was ambitious:

  • Store much more information

  • Take up less physical space

  • Be read quickly

  • Support Japanese characters

  • Work reliably in industrial environments

The project began with just two people.


WHY WAS IT CALLED "QR"?

The name came from the main objective:

Quick Response.

The code was designed to be read rapidly.

Instead of forcing a scanner to follow one-dimensional lines, information could be arranged across a square.

The result was the now-famous pattern:

three large squares in the corners.

Those patterns help scanners recognize the code's position and orientation.

So the scanner doesn't have to carefully align with it like an old barcode.

It can recognize it quickly from different angles.


THE FIRST CUSTOMER WASN'T A RESTAURANT

In 1994, DENSO released the QR Code.

Its original target was production management for automotive parts.

DENSO's own history describes the first mission of QR Code as managing automotive-part production.

It needed to work in factories where codes could encounter things such as oil and dirt while still being readable.

The QR Code was therefore built around a very industrial requirement:

Track parts faster.

Not:

Let customers scan today's menu.


THEN SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENED

DENSO didn't keep the technology locked inside the automotive industry.

The company made the QR Code specifications publicly available and chose not to enforce its patent rights in a way that would prevent free use.

That made adoption much easier.

And the technology started moving.

Factories.

Logistics.

Food.

Pharmaceuticals.

Retail.

Product packaging.

Then eventually:

mobile phones.


THE PHONE CHANGED EVERYTHING

The next major turning point came in 2002, when mobile phones with QR-code scanning capabilities began appearing.

Suddenly, a QR code could connect a physical object directly to the internet.

Scan it and:

↓ Open a website

↓ Get a coupon

↓ Access information

↓ Buy something

↓ Later, make a payment

The code that had originally been designed for industrial production suddenly had a completely different use.

It became a bridge between the physical and digital worlds.


RESTAURANTS CAME MUCH LATER

The restaurant QR code is actually a very late chapter in the story.

The technology had already existed for decades before restaurants began putting little squares on tables.

And even before smartphones made QR codes famous, they were already being used on consumer products.

DENSO says the first general commercial product use was on contact-lens packages, because the small packages benefited from the code's compact size.

So when you scan a QR code to open a restaurant menu today, you're using an industrial invention in a completely different environment.


THE STRANGEST PART: DENSO DIDN'T NEED TO OWN THE WHOLE MARKET

This is where the business story gets interesting.

DENSO could have treated QR Code like proprietary technology and tried to control every use.

Instead, it made the specifications widely available.

That helped the technology spread across industries and countries.

More users created more applications.

More applications made QR codes more useful.

More usefulness created even more adoption.

It became a technology infrastructure rather than simply a DENSO product.


FROM CAR PARTS TO CASHLESS PAYMENTS

The evolution is almost ridiculous when you look at it backwards.

1994

Automotive production.

Manufacturing and logistics

Tracking parts and production information.

Consumer products

Packaging and product management.

2002

Mobile-phone scanning.

Websites and coupons

Physical objects become gateways to digital information.

Smartphones

QR scanning becomes trivial.

Payments, tickets, menus and authentication

The same basic technology becomes part of everyday life.


THE BUSINESS LESSON

The QR Code wasn't originally designed to become a consumer phenomenon.

It solved a very specific industrial problem.

That's important.

Some of the most widely used technologies don't begin by asking:

"What will millions of consumers want?"

They begin with:

"What is making this job unnecessarily difficult?"

DENSO's problem was that factories had too much information and traditional barcodes weren't keeping up.

The solution was a better way to encode and read information.

The world later found thousands of other uses for it.


MAACAT PERSPECTIVE

The QR Code is a great example of how infrastructure can become invisible consumer technology.

You probably don't think about automotive manufacturing when you scan a restaurant menu.

You don't think about Japanese production lines when you pay with a QR code.

And you certainly don't think about barcode limitations when you open a website from a little black-and-white square.

But that's where the story began.

A technology designed to move information around a car factory eventually became a way for billions of people to connect the physical world to the internet.

The restaurant menu was never the original idea.

It was just one of the many things the QR Code eventually learned to do.
