THE BARCODE WAS INVENTED DECADES BEFORE SUPERMARKETS COULD ACTUALLY USE IT

The idea existed in 1949. The first supermarket barcode wasn't scanned until 1974.

Today, buying groceries looks almost effortless.

Put an item on the checkout.

Beep.

The price appears.

Another item.

Beep.

But behind that tiny sound is a technology that spent more than two decades waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

The barcode was invented in 1949.

The first supermarket barcode wasn't scanned until 1974.

And the people who invented it originally didn't even have the technology needed to make it practical.


IT STARTED WITH A SUPERMARKET PROBLEM

In the late 1940s, supermarket checkout was painfully manual.

Cashiers had to enter prices individually.

Inventory also had to be counted and tracked manually.

A supermarket executive approached researchers at Drexel Institute of Technology with a simple request:

Could a machine automatically identify products and speed up checkout?

Graduate student Bernard Silver heard about the problem.

He told his friend Norman Joseph Woodland.

Woodland became obsessed with finding a solution.


WOODLAND DREW THE IDEA IN THE SAND

In 1948–49, Woodland was staying with his grandparents in Miami Beach.

He began thinking about Morse code.

Morse code uses dots and dashes.

Woodland wondered:

What if the dots and dashes were turned into lines?

He drew lines in the sand with his fingers.

Then he curved the lines into a circle.

That became the basic idea behind his first barcode.

Not the rectangular barcode we recognize today.

A bull's-eye made from concentric circles.

Woodland and Silver filed their patent in 1949.

It was granted in 1952.

But there was a problem.

The barcode worked in theory.

The world wasn't ready for it.


THE INVENTORS WERE DECADES TOO EARLY

Their early prototype was enormous.

It used a powerful 500-watt incandescent light bulb and an oscilloscope to read the code.

The equipment was roughly the size of a desk.

It was an extraordinary demonstration of the concept.

But it wasn't something you could install at every supermarket checkout.

The technology needed:

  • Better light sources

  • Smaller electronics

  • Faster computers

  • Reliable scanners

  • Better printing

  • A standardized product code

Without those things, the barcode remained largely an invention waiting for its supporting technology.


THEN SUPERMARKETS STARTED GETTING DESPERATE

By the 1960s, the grocery industry was becoming increasingly interested in automation.

Supermarkets wanted faster checkout.

They wanted fewer pricing errors.

They wanted better inventory information.

And they wanted to reduce the enormous amount of manual work involved in processing thousands of products.

Kroger was one of the chains that began seriously investigating automated checkout.

In 1966, Kroger even published material asking whether an optical scanner could automatically read prices and speed up service.

The technology was finally becoming interesting again.


RCA BUILT A WORKING SYSTEM

Researchers at RCA found Woodland and Silver's old barcode patent.

They began experimenting with the bull's-eye design.

And in 1972, RCA installed an early automated checkout system at a Kroger store in Cincinnati.

It worked.

The concept that had been drawn in the sand more than twenty years earlier was finally becoming a practical retail technology.

But the industry faced another problem.

Every manufacturer couldn't use its own barcode.

A universal system was needed.


THE GROCERY INDUSTRY HAD TO AGREE ON ONE CODE

Imagine Coca-Cola using one system.

Kellogg's using another.

Nestlé using another.

And every supermarket having to recognize all of them.

That would defeat the purpose.

So grocery manufacturers and retailers created an industry committee to choose a Universal Product Code.

Several companies submitted competing designs.

RCA had an established system.

IBM entered the competition too.

And IBM engineer George Laurer developed the rectangular barcode that eventually became the familiar UPC.

In 1973, the industry selected Laurer's design.

The modern supermarket barcode had finally been standardized.


THEN CAME THE FIRST BEEP

June 26, 1974.

Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio.

Cashier Sharon Buchanan scanned a package of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

Price:

67 cents.

It was the first product ever scanned using the new UPC system.

The technology that had begun with Woodland drawing lines in Miami Beach in 1949 had finally reached an actual supermarket checkout.


WHY DID IT TAKE 25 YEARS?

Because inventing something isn't the same as making it commercially useful.

The barcode required an entire ecosystem.

1949

Woodland and Silver invent the concept.

1952

Patent granted.

1960s

Supermarkets become desperate for checkout automation.

1972

RCA tests automated checkout.

1973

The industry selects the UPC.

1974

First barcode is scanned.

1980s

Barcodes spread through retail.

The invention was waiting for:

computers + lasers + scanners + standards + manufacturers + retailers.

Only when all of those pieces came together could the barcode become a mass-market technology.


WALMART HELPED MAKE IT HUGE

Once the technology worked, mass retailers had an enormous reason to adopt it.

A company such as Walmart handles thousands of products across thousands of locations.

The more products you sell, the more valuable automatic identification becomes.

The barcode didn't just make checkout faster.

It created data.

A scan could tell a retailer:

What was sold

When it was sold

Where it was sold

How much inventory remains

What needs to be reordered

The barcode became an information system disguised as a few black lines.

Smithsonian notes that the technology eventually transformed inventory control, production and retail data collection far beyond its original checkout purpose.


THE ORIGINAL INVENTION BECAME MUCH BIGGER THAN SUPERMARKETS

Today, barcode systems aren't limited to grocery stores.

They are used across:

  • Warehouses

  • Manufacturing

  • Healthcare

  • Logistics

  • Shipping

  • Retail

  • Supply chains

GS1 says its barcode system is now scanned more than 10 billion times per day.

The original problem was:

"How do we get customers through checkout faster?"

The eventual answer became:

"How do we identify and track almost everything moving through a modern supply chain?"


THE FUNNIEST PART

Norman Joseph Woodland's original idea wasn't immediately valuable.

He and Silver eventually sold the patent to Philco for $15,000.

That was essentially all the money they personally made from the invention.

The technology later became one of the foundations of modern retail.


THE BARCODE WASN'T A BAD IDEA

It was an idea born too early.

That's an important difference.

A technology can fail commercially because:

The market doesn't need it.

But it can also fail because:

The market needs it before the technology is ready.

The barcode was the second type.

Supermarkets already had the problem.

They simply didn't yet have the affordable computers, scanners and infrastructure required to solve it.

MAACAT PERSPECTIVE

The barcode is a perfect example of why invention and adoption are two completely different businesses.

Woodland and Silver had the idea in 1949.

But an idea on paper wasn't enough.

It took:

Better electronics

Laser technology

Microcomputers

Industry-wide standards

Retailer adoption

Manufacturer adoption

to turn a drawing in the sand into billions of daily transactions.

The most important invention isn't always the one created first.

Sometimes it's the one that finally becomes practical enough for everyone else to use.
