DONATELLA VERSACE JUST STARTED A NEW FASHION BUSINESS WITHOUT OWNING VERSACE
DONATELLA VERSACE JUST STARTED A NEW FASHION BUSINESS WITHOUT OWNING VERSACE
Donatella Versace spent nearly three decades shaping Versace. Now she is building something new — without owning the Versace company, without using its name, and without rebuilding a traditional fashion house from scratch.
DONATELLA IS NO LONGER RUNNING VERSACE
Donatella Versace stepped down as Versace's chief creative officer in March 2025 after almost 30 years shaping the fashion house.
She later remained connected to the brand as its chief brand ambassador.
Then the ownership changed.
Prada Group acquired Versace in 2025 for about €1.3 billion.
So the company carrying the Versace name is now part of Prada's business.
But Donatella's creative identity did not disappear with the ownership change.
And that is where the new business becomes interesting.
On September 21, 2026, Donatella and Revolve Group announced a new joint venture covering fashion and beauty.
It is an independent business.
It is not a new Versace line.
It is not owned by Versace.
And it does not even have a public name yet.
SHE IS BUILDING A BRAND WITHOUT STARTING WITH A BRAND NAME
Most new fashion businesses begin with a name.
Then:
Name → logo → product → website → audience
Donatella's new venture is beginning differently.
The audience already knows Donatella.
The creative reputation already exists.
The cultural associations already exist.
The new company therefore does not have to manufacture all of its initial attention from zero.
The business can eventually build:
Donatella's identity
↓
new creative language
↓
new products
↓
new brand
That distinction matters.
She is not transferring Versace into a new company.
She is transferring something much harder to quantify:
her personal creative capital.
REVOLVE BRINGS THE PART DONATELLA DOESN'T NEED TO REBUILD
This is where the partnership becomes a business model rather than simply a celebrity collaboration.
Donatella brings:
creative direction
fashion credibility
cultural influence
personal audience
decades of experience
Revolve brings:
technology
e-commerce infrastructure
operations
marketing
consumer intelligence
global reach
an existing digital community
The joint venture therefore combines two different assets.
Donatella = creative demand
Revolve = commercial infrastructure
That can be much faster than building both sides independently.
REVOLVE IS NOT A TRADITIONAL LUXURY HOUSE
Revolve was founded in 2003 and built itself around digital fashion retail.
The company operates the REVOLVE and FWRD platforms and has developed a business heavily connected to social media, creators, community and online discovery.
Vogue reported that Revolve generated $1.23 billion in revenue in 2025.
That makes the partnership particularly interesting.
Donatella spent decades inside one of fashion's most famous traditional houses.
Revolve built its business around a much more digital method of discovering products.
The new company is effectively combining the two.
Luxury-fashion creative authority
digital-native distribution
THE FIRST PRODUCT WON'T EVEN BE FASHION
The venture will cover fashion and beauty.
But the first launch is expected to begin with beauty.
The first products are planned for 2027.
The company has not yet revealed the exact product category, name or full product lineup.
That creates another interesting business decision.
Beauty can allow a new brand to enter the market without immediately building a huge fashion collection.
A fashion launch can require:
dozens of designs.
different sizes.
multiple materials.
seasonal collections.
inventory.
complex logistics.
Beauty can potentially begin with a much narrower product universe.
The company can therefore test:
Creative identity → product → audience reaction → repeat purchase
before expanding further.
THE REAL PRODUCT MAY NOT BE CLOTHING
The announcement describes something broader than a normal fashion label.
The venture is intended to combine:
fashion
beauty
entertainment
talent
creators
content
community
and commerce.
That matters because modern fashion brands increasingly compete for attention before they compete for shelf space.
A person might discover a product through:
a creator.
a music artist.
a video.
a celebrity appearance.
a social post.
a cultural moment.
Then eventually:
content → interest → product → purchase
The product is only one part of the ecosystem.
DONATELLA'S NAME IS ITSELF AN ACQUISITION
There is another unusual economic concept here.
When a company hires an unknown designer, it must build that person's reputation.
Donatella doesn't have that problem.
Her name already has decades of accumulated associations with:
fashion.
celebrities.
music.
red carpets.
pop culture.
Italian design.
Versace.
That history cannot simply be recreated by a new marketing department.
The joint venture is therefore monetizing something that took decades to build.
But importantly, it is doing so through a new commercial vehicle.
THIS IS PERSONAL BRAND AS BUSINESS INFRASTRUCTURE
A personal brand is often treated as something useful for social media.
But Donatella's situation demonstrates another possibility.
A personal reputation can become an input into a company.
Think of the structure:
Donatella's reputation
↓
consumer attention
↓
new company
↓
products
↓
commerce
The personal brand attracts the first layer of attention.
The company then attempts to turn that attention into an independent asset.
That is very different from simply being a celebrity ambassador for somebody else's product.
SHE ALSO DOESN'T HAVE TO BUILD THE WEBSITE, LOGISTICS AND RETAIL NETWORK
This is perhaps the most practical part of the deal.
Starting a fashion company from zero means building infrastructure.
You need:
payment systems.
e-commerce.
customer acquisition.
inventory management.
fulfilment.
marketing.
analytics.
international distribution.
customer service.
Revolve already has much of that machinery.
The official announcement says Revolve will power the venture through its digital commerce, technology, consumer intelligence, operations, marketing and community capabilities.
So Donatella can concentrate much more heavily on the part that made her valuable in the first place:
creative direction.
THE JOINT VENTURE ALSO CHANGES THE RISK
A traditional entrepreneur might have to fund the entire company.
A designer might have to find investors.
A retailer might have to hire a creative director.
This structure distributes the capabilities between partners.
Donatella → creative side
Revolve → commercial side
The exact ownership and financial terms of the joint venture have not been publicly disclosed.
But the structure itself is revealing.
It suggests that building a company does not always mean owning every capability inside it.
Sometimes the business is created by combining two existing competitive advantages.
THEY ARE TARGETING A DIFFERENT GENERATION
The venture is designed around how younger consumers discover style, experience culture, shop, share and connect.
That is why Revolve makes strategic sense.
The company already operates around digital discovery rather than relying entirely on traditional fashion distribution.
The intended initial markets include:
United States
Latin America
Asia-Pacific
Middle East
with additional markets potentially following later.
So this is being designed as an international digital business from the beginning.
DONATELLA GETS SOMETHING SHE COULDN'T GET FROM VERSACE
Inside an established fashion house, the designer works within an existing identity.
There is:
a heritage.
a logo.
a customer base.
existing products.
existing expectations.
existing corporate ownership.
The new venture removes much of that structure.
There is no old logo to protect.
No existing collection to continue.
No established product architecture.
No requirement to reproduce the Versace identity.
She gets to build the visual language again.
From zero.
BUT THE BUSINESS DOESN'T REALLY START FROM ZERO
This is the paradox.
The brand starts from zero.
The attention does not.
The infrastructure does not.
The creative reputation does not.
The digital distribution does not.
The cultural network does not.
That means the company can potentially skip several expensive stages of a normal startup.
A completely unknown fashion founder might have:
Product → search for audience
This venture can begin closer to:
Audience → create product for audience
That is a fundamentally different starting position.
THE MOST VALUABLE ASSET MAY BE THE COMBINATION
Donatella alone could launch something.
Revolve alone could launch another fashion or beauty product.
But the interesting part is the combination.
Donatella without infrastructure
→ creative power but more operational complexity.
Revolve without Donatella
→ infrastructure and distribution but without her decades of creative authority.
Together:
creative authority + digital infrastructure
That is the business being constructed.
THIS IS ALSO A NEW KIND OF FASHION COMPANY
The traditional fashion model often looks like:
Designer
↓
Collection
↓
Fashion show
↓
Retail
↓
Customer
The new venture is being designed around something more circular:
Creator
↓
Content
↓
Community
↓
Conversation
↓
Product
↓
Commerce
↓
More content
The product does not have to be the first interaction.
The customer can encounter the world around the product first.
AND THE NAME IS STILL SECRET
Perhaps the most interesting detail is what has not been announced.
The venture does not yet have a public brand name.
The company says the name, creative vision and first launch will be revealed in the coming months, with beauty coming first.
That means the company is already generating attention before revealing the actual product.
The announcement itself becomes part of the launch.
Announcement → curiosity → speculation → audience → eventual product reveal
The marketing process has started before the product exists publicly.
DONATELLA IS NOT REBUILDING VERSACE
This distinction is important.
Versace now belongs to Prada Group.
Donatella's new venture with Revolve is independent.
The two businesses are separate.
So the interesting story isn't:
“Donatella is launching Versace again.”
It is:
“Donatella is using everything she personally accumulated during the Versace era to help build something that is not Versace.”
That is a much more unusual business model.
THE BUSINESS LESSON
A founder, designer or creator can accumulate assets that are not technically owned by the company they worked for.
Reputation.
Audience.
Taste.
Relationships.
Cultural relevance.
Creative authority.
When the corporate relationship ends, those assets can potentially support an entirely new business.
The important question becomes:
What belongs to the company — and what belongs to the person?
MAACAT PERSPECTIVE
Donatella's new venture shows why personal brands can become economically powerful without owning the old company that made them famous.
Versace owns the Versace business.
Donatella owns something different:
the ability to turn her creative identity into attention.
Revolve owns the infrastructure that can turn that attention into digital commerce.
The new company is being built in the space between the two.
And that may be the most interesting part:
you don't always need to own the old business to build the next one.
