WHO IS LIVER KING? HOW A FAKE “ANCESTRAL” LIFESTYLE BECAME A MILLION-DOLLAR BRAND

WHO IS LIVER KING?

HOW A FAKE “ANCESTRAL” LIFESTYLE BECAME A MILLION-DOLLAR BRAND

His real name is Brian Johnson.

The internet knows him as Liver King.

Beard.

Massive muscles.

Raw organs.

Animal skins.

Extreme workouts.

And one simple message:

Live like your ancestors.

But behind the bizarre videos was something much more sophisticated:

a personal brand built to sell products.

BEFORE THE LIVER KING

Brian Johnson was already involved in business before becoming famous online.

He and his wife launched Ancestral Supplements, a company selling supplements made from animal organs, including beef liver and other organs. The business began years before the Liver King character became a social-media phenomenon.

Then Johnson realized something.

The supplement business needed attention.

And attention needed a story.

THEN HE CREATED LIVER KING

In 2021, Brian Johnson transformed himself into the character known as Liver King.

The concept was extreme.

He presented himself as a modern-day caveman who had rejected the softness of modern society.

His philosophy revolved around what he called the Ancestral Tenets.

Sleep.

Eat.

Move.

Shield.

Connect.

Cold.

Sun.

Fight.

Bond.

His official website continues to present these principles as the foundation of his "ancestral lifestyle."

THE CHARACTER WAS THE MARKETING

This was the genius of the concept.

Nobody was going to become famous for selling liver capsules.

But a giant, shirtless man eating raw organs while shouting about ancestral strength?

That's content.

The product was ordinary.

The character wasn't.

And the character made the product memorable.

SOCIAL MEDIA EXPLODED

Liver King began posting heavily on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

His videos were deliberately extreme.

Raw liver.

Raw organs.

Outdoor workouts.

Cold exposure.

Hunting.

Massive meals.

Aggressive speeches.

The content was almost impossible to ignore.

And that created the perfect marketing loop:

EXTREME CHARACTER

THE BRAND AND THE PRODUCT WERE CONNECTED

This is what made Liver King's business model so powerful.

He wasn't simply saying:

“Buy my supplement.”

He was saying:

“This is how I live. This is why I'm strong. Become like me.”

The product became part of the lifestyle.

That's a much stronger marketing proposition than simply advertising ingredients.

THE BUSINESS WAS ALREADY THERE

Ancestral Supplements became the commercial foundation behind the image.

The company sells organ-based supplements such as beef liver, beef organs and bone marrow capsules.

Johnson's social-media persona then became a gigantic distribution channel for the category.

Instead of paying traditional advertising agencies to build awareness, he effectively turned himself into the advertisement.

THEN CAME THE CLAIM

Liver King's physique became part of his marketing.

The implication was that his extreme ancestral lifestyle was responsible for his appearance.

He repeatedly presented himself as natural.

And this became the most important part of the controversy.

THEN EVERYTHING COLLAPSED

In 2022, leaked emails and other information revealed evidence of anabolic steroid use.

Johnson eventually admitted that he had used steroids after previously denying it.

The Washington Post reported that he acknowledged using anabolic steroids and that the revelations contradicted his previous claims about being natural.

That changed the entire story.

The question was no longer:

“How does Liver King live?”

It became:

“How much of Liver King's story was real?”

THE PROBLEM WASN'T JUST STEROIDS

From a business perspective, the controversy was especially damaging because his physique wasn't merely entertainment.

It was part of the sales narrative.

If someone believes:

“This man's body proves that his lifestyle works,”

they may be more willing to buy the products associated with that lifestyle.

When the foundation of that belief is questioned, the marketing proposition becomes much weaker.

THE PERSONAL BRAND BECAME THE LIABILITY

This is the biggest lesson from Liver King's story.

His personality was his greatest marketing asset.

But it was also his greatest vulnerability.

Because:

Liver King = Brian Johnson = Lifestyle = Products

Everything was connected.

If one part collapsed, the others were affected.

THE BUSINESS FLYWHEEL

The original model looked like:

PERSONA

VIRAL CONTENT

AUDIENCE

TRUST

ANCESTRAL LIFESTYLE

SUPPLEMENTS

REVENUE

MORE CONTENT

It was an extremely efficient attention funnel.

THEN THE FLYWHEEL REVERSED

After the steroid revelations:

CONTROVERSY

MEDIA ATTENTION

LOSS OF TRUST

QUESTIONS ABOUT PRODUCTS

REPUTATIONAL DAMAGE

The same attention mechanism that created the brand amplified the scandal.

BUT HE DIDN'T DISAPPEAR

Liver King continued building his online presence after the scandal.

His brand remains active, and he has continued promoting the ancestral lifestyle and related businesses. His current website still presents him as the CEO of the ancestral-lifestyle movement and promotes products, content and his community.

In 2025, Netflix also released Untold: The Liver King, examining his rise and the steroid controversy.

THE INTERESTING BUSINESS LESSON

Liver King's story isn't simply:

“Influencer got caught using steroids.”

The deeper business story is:

A person created a character.

The character created attention.

The attention created an audience.

The audience created demand.

The demand supported products.

That is the modern creator-business model in an extreme form.

THE POWER OF A CHARACTER

Liver King understood something that many businesses don't:

People remember stories better than products.

Nobody gets emotionally attached to:

“Capsules containing desiccated beef organs.”

But people remember:

“Liver King eats raw liver because liver is king.”

The character gave the product a story.

The story gave the product attention.

THE BIG RISK

There is a fundamental difference between:

Building a brand around a fictional character

and

building a brand around claims that consumers believe are literally true.

If the character is entertainment, audiences understand the exaggeration.

If the character is being used to demonstrate that a lifestyle produces a specific physical result, credibility becomes critical.

That's where Liver King's strategy became dangerous.

MAACAT PERSPECTIVE

Liver King demonstrates both sides of personal-brand marketing.

The upside:

A powerful character can turn an obscure product into a recognizable brand.

The downside:

When the person is the brand, credibility becomes an asset that is extremely difficult to separate from the business.

His story can therefore be summarized as:

Character → Attention → Audience → Product → Business

But also:

Character → Trust → Controversy → Reputation Risk

The biggest lesson isn't about liver.

It isn't even about fitness.

It's about branding.

When you become the product, your reputation becomes part of the balance sheet.
